Clinical Nursing Placement

Clinical Placement

To maintain the integrity of our programs and ensure Nursing@Georgetown students benefit from carefully monitored clinical experiences designed to enhance their education and coursework, Georgetown University individually selects preceptors and clinical sites based upon each student’s needs and location. Georgetown faculty members will make a concerted effort to identify a highly skilled preceptor in a clinical facility that is convenient to your current location.

Not only do faculty-selected field placements enable us to organize clinical learning experiences that accurately reflect the high standards and curricula of Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies, they reduce a significant amount of the administrative responsibility from our incoming students.

Each of the specialty programs offered through Nursing@Georgetown has its own clinical course requirements and objectives. For specific details, please refer to your chosen program’s curriculum.

Preceptors

Georgetown University only selects preceptors who will act as highly skilled mentors to our students. The role of the preceptor includes guiding, evaluating, supporting, encouraging, and advocating for the student as they learn the appropriate care of patients. Preceptors can share valuable knowledge and unique perspectives in their specialized field and provide students with an opportunity to understand the creativity and caring that occurs in the process.

Your assigned preceptor will:

  • Review and discuss the semester objectives and how these may be accomplished.
  • Review and discuss the daily objectives and needs of your setting.
  • Assign patients consistent with your education and experience level.
  • Assign patients as appropriate to the daily objectives.
  • Enable you to perform health assessment, rechecking any history or physical assessment as necessary.
  • Guide you in developing appropriate treatment plans.
  • Discuss management and treatment protocols appropriate to the care of the client, including interpretation of diagnostics.
  • Provide ongoing or periodic evaluations of the clinical experience.

Nursing@Georgetown provides the unique ability for preceptors, clinical faculty, and students to engage in online feedback sessions. This creates a collaborative learning environment that promotes critical thinking, encourages discussion and inspires the passion for excellence in nursing.
