Nursing@Georgetown Celebrates Two Years

nursing students working in the fieldGeorgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies is celebrating a milestone: the two-year anniversary of the launch of Nursing@Georgetown, an innovative master of science in nursing program delivered online. Taught by our highly respected faculty, these programs are designed to help the next generation of nursing leaders achieve their career goals while improving the health and well-being of all people.

Since the launch of the first cohort in March 2011, we have expanded to include more than 700 students from 43 states. Here are a few additional highlights:

New Program Offerings

The Family Nurse Practitioner program was the first specialty to be offered, followed by Nurse-Midwifery/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Educator. In March 2012, we announced the addition of the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner/Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist program, preparing registered nurses to deliver high-quality care to acutely ill patients from age 17 to the elderly.

When asked what makes the Nursing@Georgetown AG-ACNP/CNS program special, the director of the program, Karen Kesten, DNP, APRN, CCRN, PCCN, CNE, CCNS, said it’s all about the strong relationship between faculty and students.

“Students are mentored shoulder-to-shoulder in the classroom and in clinical practice as they develop collegial relationships with faculty. … The opportunity to debrief and reflect on the learning experience with faculty as the “guide at the side” is extraordinary.”

First Cohort Graduates

At the end of September 2012, the first six students graduated from Nursing@Georgetown. All of them went on to successfully pass their boards.

Kathryn K. Ellis, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ANP-BC, directs the Family Nurse Practitioner program and says teaching the first cohort of full-time students cemented for her the potential of online education.

“It is a professional highlight for me to have taught the first cohort of online FNP students,” Ellis said. “Their commitment to excellence in education and practice is commendable. Their academic performance is impressive and confirmed in my mind that the distance education model we have adapted is working.”

Our faculty members work to create a robust online learning experience with live, face-to-face classes, an approximate 10-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio, and high-quality academic content, according to Jeanne Matthews, PhD, RN, chair of the Department of Nursing at NHS. Students also visit Georgetown’s campus for educational activities and learning assessments, called On-Campus Intensives, and complete clinical education at sites based on their specialty and location.
