The Forensic Science Behind Bruise Healing [Infographic]

How quickly do bruises heal? Do human characteristics such as skin tone and gender play a role in the healing process? What other factors influence the color of bruises and how they change over time? In situations involving victims of violence, forensic health care professionals are often asked to assess not only the extent of an injury such as a bruise, but also its approximate age.

In a recent study, Katherine Nash Scafide, PhD, RN, an assistant professor of nursing at Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies, analyzed how different characteristics play a factor in the bruise healing process. Her research is unique in that, up until now, most research into bruise healing has involved small sample sizes. Scafide’s study comprised 103 participants who varied in gender and skin color.

We created the following infographic to illustrate her findings.
