Nursing Scholarships and Nursing Grants
There are many different scholarships, grants, and loan programs to help nursing students pay for their education.
Below is a list of some scholarship and grant opportunities available to nursing students.

Amount: $5,000
Description: The American Association of Colleges of Nurses (AACN) has collaborated with CertifiedBackground.com to offer a new scholarship for students in baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs. To qualify for this scholarship, students must be enrolled in CertifiedBackground.com-affiliated schools or NursingCAS (Centralized Application Services) programs. Each year until 2015, CertifiedBackground.com will grant eight $5,000 student scholarships for a total of $200,000 over a five-year period.

Description: Hurst Review Services and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing are delighted to announce a scholarship partnership. Students currently enrolled in pre-licensure programs at member AACN schools are eligible. Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded twice yearly.

Description: Students enrolled in professional nursing education programs can apply for a $20,000 annual scholarship from AfterCollege and AACN. To qualify, students must be enrolled in a baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degree program in nursing with a GPA of 3.25 or greater.

Description: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and AACN have announced a new call for proposals for the RWJF New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program. This dynamic program is designed to enhance the appeal of nursing programs and promote accelerated baccalaureate and master’s nursing programs. Up to 400 entry-level nursing students will be awarded scholarships.
Amount: $1,000
Description: This scholarship is awarded to nursing majors in economic need. Individuals must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. All applicants must be U.S. citizens.
Amount: $5,000
Description: To acknowledge and encourage excellence in nursing care of mothers and babies, the March of Dimes offers several $5,000 scholarships each year to registered nurses enrolled in maternal-child nursing graduate programs. The deadline is January 15, 2013. See eligibility requirements.

Description: Students planning to work as midwives in homes or birth centers after graduation may qualify for an Edith B. Wonnell Scholarship. Applicants must be enrolled in an ACME-accredited midwifery education program with good standing and have satisfactorily finished one clinical module or academic/clinical semester or quarter. Membership in the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is required.

Description: Eligible applicants must classify themselves as a person of color. Applicants must also be in good standing in an ACME-accredited basic midwifery school, be a member of the ACNM, and have effectively completed one academic or clinical semester/quarter or clinical module. Applications must be submitted electronically. Others will not be considered.

Description: This scholarship is open to master’s or doctoral students enrolled in a full- or part-time professional National League for Nursing Accreditation (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. Applicants must have at least 12 credits completed and a minimum GPA of 3.6. NEF’s scholarships open October 1, 2012 and close February 1, 2013. Description: Competent international nurses are invited to apply for this work-study program. Combining a bachelor’s or master’s degree with practical education and employment, this program will prepare recipients to advance nursing skills and create new career opportunities. Must be completed at an approved university-affiliated U.S. hospital.
Amount: $1,000
Description: Students with majors in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical technologies are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. To qualify, applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens and be enrolled full time in their third year of college. Registered nurse (RN) students must have their first year completed. Not available to pre-med students. For M.D. or D.D.S. students, the applicant must be in the second year of school. Inquiries for paper scholarship applications must include a stamped, self-addressed legal-size envelope.

Description: The Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship is a one-time award available to students who are accepted or enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Candidates must be members, descendants of members, or be qualified for membership in New York State Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). Application must include their DAR member number.
Amount: $500
Description: Scholarship will be granted to a nursing student with a disability. Applicants must be students with a recognized disability who have applied to or already been accepted to a full-time college or university program. Other scholarships are available. An essay, high school transcripts, and three letters of recommendation are required.

Description: JACL currently offers more than 30 scholarships, totaling over $70,000 in yearly awards to qualified students nationwide. One-time awards are available to active National JACL members. Individuals of any ethnicity can become a JACL member. Applicants must be full-time college or graduate students. Amount: Full tuition, fees, books, and monthly stipend
Description: Students must be enrolled in a professional registered nurse program at an accredited school of nursing in the United States. Must be licensed and working at a critical shortage facility within six months after graduation. Two-year commitment at the facility is required. Sign up to receive email update when the 2013 scholarship application period opens.
Amount: $3,000
Description: This one-time award is available to an individual currently pursuing a master’s nursing degree at an National League for Nursing (NLN) or CCNE-accredited school of nursing for the 2012-2013 academic year. The candidate must have an RN license and a passion and commitment to oncology nursing. Upon receiving their degree, nurses will write a reflection of the educational activities in which they participated.

Description: This award is offered to those seeking an advanced nursing degree such as Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). To apply, individuals must be currently employed as a staff nurse with at least 75 percent of their time devoted to direct patient oncology care. Must also have two or more years in oncology nursing by the application due date.
Amount: Up to $3,000
Description: Scholarships open to individual possessing or in pursuit of a BSN or MSN degrees. Those with advanced degrees are not qualified for this award. Active membership in AACN at the time of application and during the term of the scholarship is required.

Description: Nursing students (either U.S. citizens or international students) may apply. Applicants must be in an accredited RN licensure program, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral candidate with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must have a vested interest in perioperative and surgical nursing. The personal statement must clearly articulate that interest.
Amount: $1,000
Description: Presented each year at the ACNP National Clinical Conference, this award includes a one-year membership to ACNP and a $1,000 scholarship. The individual will also receive a complimentary registration to the Clinical Conference and a maximum of $750 to cover travel and hotel costs.

Description: A candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program and must be a nurse practitioner graduate student who has made a noteworthy positive impact in school, the community, or in patient care while working towards his or her degree. Application must be submitted via U.S. mail. No electronic copies or faxes will be accepted.
Amount: $1,000
Description: This scholarship is open to nurse practitioner graduate students interested in the field of gastroenterology. Online and faxed submissions will not be accepted.
Amount: $4,000
Description: A one-time amount of $4,000 is available to licensed nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner graduate students whose work, research, or academic pursuits are associated with promoting heart health. Awards will be presented in pediatrics, adult medicine, and geriatrics.
Amount: $5,000
Description: This award is offered to practicing nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner graduate students whose work or academic research is geared toward pain management. Initiatives and projects that focus on pain relief while avoiding misuse/abuse/exploitation will be given special consideration.

Description: View the film A Nurse I Am and submit the scholarship application (including a mandatory essay). The 2013 A Nurse I Am Scholarship entry period begins in late November. Description: Over the past 20 years, the makers of Tylenol have awarded more than $8.7 million in scholarships to students pursuing an education in health care. The next application period begins in spring 2013.

Description: In order to fill the urgent need for additional nurses, 25 $1,000 McKesson Nursing Scholarships are presented yearly to low-income nursing students. Please direct questions about nursing scholarships to (718) 210-0705 or nsna@nsna.org.
Nursing Scholarships for Minority Students
Amount: $1,500 per year
Description: Open to American Indian and Alaska Native full-time students who are enrolled in a graduate degree program in any curriculum. Applicant must be at least one-quarter Indian descendant from a federally recognized tribe. Please include a certificate of enrollment and blood quantum from your tribe or Bureau of Indian Affairs (B.I.A.). Students may apply on a yearly basis.
Amount: $1,500
Description: Available to all public health majors of American Indian and Alaska Native descent. Payout is made in the amount of $1,500 per semester, following a copy of first semester grades and a forthcoming class schedule. Students are eligible to apply on a yearly basis.

Description: This scholarship is offered for individuals of American Indian and Alaska Native descent pursuing a master’s degree in art, public health, or law. Full-time students only. Applicant must be at least one-quarter degree Indian heritage from a federally acknowledged tribe. Please include a certificate of enrollment and blood quantum from your tribe or B.I.A.
Amount: $500-$2,000
Description: Available to MSN students currently enrolled in a nursing program. Applicant must be in good academic standing at the time of application. Must be a current NBNA member, as well as with the local chapter, if applicable. Must have at least one full year of school remaining.
Amount: $1,000-$5,000
Description: This scholarship is available to all U.S. citizens of Hispanic heritage. Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a permanent resident card or current passport stamped I-551. Must also have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be a full-time student at a two- or four-year U.S.-accredited (or U.S. territories) institution for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Amount: $1,500
Description: Candidate must have a minimum of one-quarter Indian blood from a federally recognized tribe. Certificate of enrollment and blood quantum from his or her tribe or Bureau of Indian Affairs must be included with application. Award is based upon financial need and academic accomplishments.
Amount: Up to $5,000
Description: Scholarship is open to students in nursing graduate programs with intent of licensure. Deadline is April of each year. Must be an NAHN member for at least six months.

Search for awards by state, religion, Air Force and Navy, minority, college, or nursing areas like gerontology, long-term care, oncology, and much more. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing provides a great list of current scholarship resources for a variety of nursing degrees, including graduate and post-graduate programs. Undergraduate nursing students can search for licensure programs and general scholarships, financial aid information, and links to loan settlement or forgiveness options.
