Master of Science Degree in Nursing Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the online Master of Science degree in Nursing (MS in Nursing) program, you must: 

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or CNL/entry-level MS in Nursing from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program
  • Hold a current U.S. registered nurse (RN) license
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 science GPA
  • Have successfully completed a college level three-credit course in statistics with a grade of C or better
  • AG-ACNP Applicants Please Note: AG-ACNP requires at least one year of full-time experience in an intensive care unit, emergency department, telemetry unit, or progressive care unit.

Master of Science Degree in Nursing Application Items 

As part of the MS in Nursing application process, you will be asked to provide or participate in the following: 

  • Professional resume or curriculum vitae indicating higher education institutions attended and dates of attendance, work and clinical experience (with dates), and other activities.
  • Academic transcripts from all postsecondary institutions you have attended, including any community college coursework. See Transcript for additional details. 
  • A one- to two-page personal statement that addresses your intellectual interests, relevant clinical experiences, and reasons for pursuing the specific nursing specialty to which you are applying.
  • A live recorded interview that is recorded via web camera in our online classroom, the same web platform used to host classes. During the interview, you will be provided a series of prompts that help Georgetown University understand how your personal and professional experiences have prepared you for an advanced practice role. You will contact an Enrollment Specialist to schedule your interview.
  • Two letters of recommendation required from (with option for third letter of recommendation):
    • A current clinical supervisor or nurse manager (who directly supervised you in a clinical setting)
    • A professor, faculty member, or academic advisor (who can provide meaningful input regarding your academic record)
      OR
    • A practicing advanced practice nurse (APRN) who has served as a mentor or whom you have shadowed (preferably in the APRN specialty to which you are applying)
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if your native language is not English.

The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required; however, to determine if the GRE will strengthen your application, contact an Enrollment Specialist at 1-877-910-HOYA (4692).

BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice Requirements 

To be eligible to apply for the online BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or CNL/entry-level MS in Nursing from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program
  • Hold a current U.S. registered nurse (RN) license
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 science GPA
  • Have successfully completed a college level three-credit course in statistics within the last five years with a grade of C or better
  • Have one year of full-time registered nursing experience
  • AG-ACNP Applicants Please Note: AG-ACNP requires at least one year of full-time experience in an intensive care unit, emergency department, telemetry unit, or progressive care unit.

BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice Application Items

As part of the BSN to DNP Program application process, you will be asked to provide or participate in the following:

  • Professional resume or curriculum vitae indicating higher education institutions attended and dates of attendance, work and clinical experience (with dates), and other activities.
  • Academic transcripts from all postsecondary institutions you have attended, including any community college coursework. See Transcript for additional details. 
  • A personal statement that outlines your professional background, interests, and long-term goals. Your essay should demonstrate your readiness for the doctorate-level education and alignment with your chosen speciality. Your statement should speak to:
    • Why you are pursuing a DNP and how it supports your career goals
    • Your understanding of the advanced practice role within your selected specialty
    • How your goals align with Georgetown’s values and commitment to improving health outcomes, health care systems, and health policy
    • Your early ideas for a scholarly project, including a problem or gap in practice you hope to address and preliminary evidence supporting its significance (with 2–3 APA-formatted references)
  • A live recorded interview that is recorded via web camera in our online classroom, the same web platform used to host classes. During the interview, you will be provided a series of prompts that help Georgetown University understand how your personal and professional experiences have prepared you for an advanced practice role. You will contact an Enrollment Specialist to schedule your interview.
  • Two letters of recommendation required from (with option for third letter of recommendation):
    • A recent, former faculty member or someone who can speak to your ability to compete in an academically rigorous doctoral program
    • A current nursing supervisor
      OR
    • An advanced practice nurse with doctoral training, preferably in the APRN specialty to which you are applying
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if your native language is not English.

Executive Doctor of Nursing Practice in Health Systems Leadership and Policy Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the online post-master’s Executive Doctor of Nursing Practice in Health Systems Leadership and Policy (Executive DNP) program, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Hold the following degrees:
    1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, or a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and entry-level MS in Nursing from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program
    2. Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing or a relevant discipline (i.e. MSN, MBA, MHA, JD) and employed in an advanced nursing role (i.e. advanced clinical practice, leadership, education, informatics, etc.)
  • Hold a current U.S. registered nurse (RN) license
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Have successfully completed a college-level, three-credit course in statistics with a grade of C or better

Executive Doctor of Nursing Practice in Health Systems Leadership and Policy Application Items

As part of the post-master’s Executive DNP application process, you will be asked to provide or participate in the following:

  • Professional resume or curriculum vitae indicating higher education institutions attended and dates of attendance, professional and/or clinical experience (with dates), and other activities.
  • Academic transcripts from all postsecondary institutions you have attended, including any community college coursework. See Transcript for additional details. 
  • A personal statement that addresses your professional interests and reasons for pursuing the DNP degree. Your statement should speak to your short- and long-term goals after completion of the DNP program as well as your scholarly project interests. Your statement should speak to:
    • Why you are pursuing a DNP and how it supports your career goals
    • Your understanding of the advanced practice role within your selected specialty – Executive Leadership
    • How your goals align with Georgetown’s values and commitment to improving health outcomes, health care systems, and health policy
    • Your early ideas for a scholarly project, including a problem or gap in practice you hope to address and preliminary evidence supporting its significance (with 2–3 APA-formatted references)
  • A recorded Writing Assessment that is recorded via web camera in our online classroom, the same web platform used to host classes. You will contact an Enrollment Specialist to schedule your writing assessment.
  • Two letters of recommendation, required from (with option for third letter of recommendation):
    • A recent, former faculty member or someone who can speak to your ability to compete in an academically rigorous doctoral program
    • A current nursing supervisor
      OR
    • An advanced practice nurse with doctoral training, preferably in the APRN specialty to which you are applying
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if your native language is not English. 

As part of the application process, you may be invited to a one-on-one webcam interview with Program Leadership following a preliminary application review. You’ll be asked about your interest in the Executive DNP program and your proposed scholarly project to help assess your goals, background, and program fit. Interviews are conducted in our online classroom platform and will be recorded for final admissions review.

Post-Graduate Certificate Program Requirements

The online Post-Graduate Certificate program is designed for executive and post-doctoral nursing professionals. To be eligible to apply for the certificate program, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Hold the following degrees:
    1. A bachelor’s degree
    2. A graduate-level nursing degree (CNL/entry-level MS in Nursing or APRN from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program, or DNAP, DNP or PhD)
  • Hold a current U.S. registered nurse (RN) license
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 science GPA
  • Have successfully completed a college level three-credit course in statistics with a grade of C or better
  • AG-ACNP Applicants Please Note: AG-ACNP requires at least one year of full-time experience in an intensive care unit, emergency department, telemetry unit, or progressive care unit.

Note: The start date selected on the application is contingent upon a thorough faculty review of previously completed degree coursework. Nursing@Georgetown faculty will provide an individualized plan of study for each student. The applicant’s start date may be shifted to a later term than the term selected in the application based on the individualized plan of study and availability of clinical placement.

Post-Graduate Certificate Program Application Items

Transcripts, Translations, and Evaluations

Applicants are required to upload to the application copies of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. We consider these uploaded transcripts to be “unofficial” as they are submitted by the applicant. 

Transcripts from both degree and non-degree coursework provide the admissions committee a more complete picture of academic preparation for graduate study. Only transcripts that have been uploaded to the application by the student are required for the application review. 

Applicants who receive an offer of admission will be required at that time to submit official final transcripts (transcripts that have been submitted directly to Georgetown University by the institution) for verification prior to enrolling. 

Do not send electronic or paper copies of your official transcripts before receiving an offer of admission.

  • Step 1: Request a copy of your official transcript from your institution.
  • Step 2: Upload the transcript to your application.

An acceptable transcript is a copy of an official transcript produced by the institution. This includes:

  • Scanned copies of paper transcripts issued by the institution
  • Electronic transcripts issued by the institution (not a download from your institution’s web portal)

Many schools issue transcripts electronically, either through their own web services or through vendors. If this option is available through the institutions you attended, specify that your transcript(s) be sent to onlinenursingapplicationservices@georgetown.edu.

We do not accept screenshots or photos, and we do not accept downloads of the “student’s view” from your institution’s website. 

International Transcripts: Applicants who have attended institutions outside of the United States are strongly encouraged to upload their transcripts in the form of World Education Services (WES) ICAP evaluations or may utilize other credential evaluation services that are members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Applicants should upload this evaluation directly to the application. If the evaluation does not include a copy of the transcripts that were evaluated, applicants must upload both the transcripts from the institution and the credential evaluation as one document to the application. Note: Some programs require a credential evaluation (WES or similar) for international transcripts. 

  • For transcripts not in English: These documents must be accompanied by an English language version provided by the academic institution. If your institution does not provide English language copies, applicants are responsible for providing a certified or notarized translation along with a copy of the original transcripts. Applicants may upload an evaluation from a credential evaluation service. This must include course and grade information. If not included in the evaluation, the transcript from the institution must be included as well. Both the evaluation and original transcript should be submitted in the application as one document.
  • In cases where a certified translation is needed, the translation should be provided by the institution or by a professional translator / translation company. Translations from friends or family members are not accepted. The translator will provide both the translated documents and a signed certification statement. The certification statement will affirm:
    • That the translator has reviewed and translated the document with name, signature, and date included
    • The completeness and accuracy of the document, and the origin country / language
    • The translator’s qualifications.
    • The translation and certification statement may be uploaded with a copy of the transcript in the original language.
  • Study Abroad and/or Transfer Coursework: If your undergraduate transcripts contain study abroad courses and/or transfer credits showing grades earned, you do NOT need to list these institutions separately or upload transcripts.  If courses are not listed on your primary institution’s transcript or the transfer courses do not show course grades, please list the institution(s) separately and upload the transcript(s).

If an offer of admission is granted and accepted, admitted students will be required to submit final official transcripts from all institutions where a degree has been earned and other institutions as designated in their admissions letter. 

Georgetown University reserves the right to request any missing transcripts or an official copy of a transcript at any point during the application and/or admission process

Georgetown University also reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission already made if there is any discrepancy between a transcript uploaded in the application and the final official transcript that is received.
