Managing the Cost of Your Nursing Degree

There are many resources available to help manage the cost of your Master of Science in Nursing degree. The first avenue to explore is financial aid from Georgetown University. Prospective students should apply for aid when they apply for admission to the Nursing@Georgetown program. For more information, see Financing Your Degree on the Nursing@Georgetown Web site.

In addition to financial aid from Georgetown, graduate nursing students can apply for scholarships that are offered by nursing and health organizations. You may find more resources at American Association of Colleges of Nursing and other reputable sites.

These are some additional sources for financial aid:

  • Employer Tuition Support may be available from a student’s employer. Working students should check with their employer’s benefits administrator or human resources department to find out more about reimbursement for tuition. Students can set up third-party billing by contacting the Georgetown Office of Student Accounts at onlinenursingstudentaccounts@georgetown.edu.
  • Federal Direct Loans and Private Education Loans may be available for Nursing@Georgetown students.  Eligibility is determined by completion of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Georgetown University graduate supplement form. For more information, visit the Graduate Nursing Online page.

Nursing@Georgetown graduates may be eligible to enroll in loan forgiveness programs to help finance their degree. These programs usually require a certain number of years of employment providing public service in a health-related field. These are some of the loan forgiveness programs available:

  • The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program offers student loan forgiveness for health care providers who work in public service jobs in communities with a shortage of health care professionals. The NHSC Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students who commit to two to four years of public service following graduation. Find out more about these programs on the National Health Service Corps Web site.
  • The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program also encourages health care graduates to work in full-time service jobs. Individuals in the program are eligible for loan forgiveness after making 120 on-time payments. Only loans made under the Direct Loan Program are eligible; loans made under other federal student loan programs will qualify after consolidation into a Direct Consolidation Loan. For more information, see the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Web site.
  • In addition to federal loan forgiveness programs, many states offer similar incentives. For additional information about specific loan forgiveness programs across the nation, visit the Health Workforce Information Center Web site or contact your state department of health and human services.

If you have questions about these loan forgiveness programs, please contact the specific company with whom you are trying to gather information on directly. Georgetown University is not involved directly in any loan forgiveness programs.
